EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESSSS PODCASSSST
A big thank you to the Get Ready Alaska Team for inviting us to talk about exotic pet care during disasters and emergencies. Join us as we delve into recent disaster events, caring for exotic pets, handling pet-related donations, and more!
DO NOT USE HANDWARMERS AS A HEAT SOURCE FOR EMERGENCIES!
They are entirely too hot, and you risk burning your animal or turning them into beef jerky. Only use UniHeat multi-purpose jumbo shipping warmers.
We have a fast-growing and tight-knit reptile community here in Alaska, but the weather is certainly not always on our side. We regularly have high winds, earthquakes, tsunami warnings, and blizzards that cause widespread power outages, particularly in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley. Palmer and Wasilla experience high winds regularly in the winter, and power outages are a common occurrence.
If you lose power, follow the recommendations in the document below. If you still have questions, please submit a message through our contact page, and a volunteer will respond as soon as possible.
If a disaster occurs, can you still care for your reptiles? Alaska is prone to earthquakes, floods, and windstorms. The latter is prevalent during the winter months, and it's not uncommon for residents to experience extended power outages. No electricity means no heat or UVB! There are also gas leaks and house fires to consider. Any of these things can turn life topsy-turvy, so be prepared!
We have emergency preparedness kits that are free to the public!
